Description: This is an association with family tradition that was formed in 1998-1999 amidst an economic shortage in Taltal. Its objective is to make it possible for residents to supply themselves with their own vegetables while also valuing the work of a group of women.
It is currently comprised of 43 partners who farm in the driest coastal desert in the world. They withdraw water from a stream located 17 kilometers away and carry it to the plots of land through pipes acquired from a FOSIS project, and with the support of Servicio País and students from schools in Antofagasta.
They have had support from INDAP for six years, specifically in technical consulting and help with irrigation projects. Included among their products are arts and crafts made from fish skin (leather tanning), as they revive age-old practices and techniques of the indigenous Changa culture that had been dormant. Their products are known for preserving the unique local attributes of the region of origin, a process of artisanal cultivation, harvest, and production, the use of spring water in the irrigation processes, and the devoted care of the fruits, which withstand the desert sun and are rejuvenated by the moisture from the camanchaca.
Among the products offered by this association’s members are olive oil, sauces, jams, hydroponic vegetables, saffron, medicinal herbs, and artisanal liquors.
