Renaico, located in the La Araucanía region, boasts optimal conditions for wind power generation. The abundance of the resource, the geographical conditions and the keen disposition of the neighbors, made it possible for the Company to launch in 2016, the Renaico Windfarm composed of 44 wind turbines and with a 88 MW capacity.
Renaico´s population totals 10,250 people (13% of indigenous origin), with a total multidimensional poverty rate equivalent to 25.9% and with an average schooling rate of 8.8 years, much below the national average of 11.2 years.
To collaborate with the growth and development of the towns and villages surrounding the power plant, Enel has put in place collaboration agreements that promote dialogue and commitment to working together with Neighbors' and Indigenous Associations, with the communities living in Mulchén and Renaico as well as with the Municipality of Renaico. Approximately 774 families have benefitted from the various collaborative projects implemented in the area.
From a productive perspective, the activities carried out at the time of installing the operation focused on agriculture, livestock, and dairy production. Currently, the predominant activities are aimed at vegetables crops, their marketing and the acquisition of skills and competencies that would permit to improve local farmers´ production processes.
This year, we would like to put special emphasis on the projects that promote and boost the Mapuche culture and worldview, permitting to rescue local knowledge and recover cultural practices.
In the area of human rights, Enel has implemented Due Diligence processes along the whole area whose results have confirmed the good relations between the Company and its neighbors. For this reason, the Company continues to incorporate initiatives into the Territorial Plan to mitigate gaps and consolidate Enel's work in the territory.
