This project directly benefits groups of farmers who use irrigation systems and students through the transfer of techniques and knowledge related to the efficient use of water resources. It also helps reduce environmental impacts by decreasing the use of agrochemicals in crops. Furthermore, it means that irrigating farmer can have more time which will improve their life quality given that it requires less time spent on irrigation.
This project is directly aligned with the Company's business vision as it operates Enel´s hydroelectric power generation assets in the Maule basin with six power plants currently in operation. As we are co-users of the basin and its water resources together with local farmers and the agricultural sector in general, the decisions and uses of each user affect the availability of resources for consumptive and non-consumptive purposes. In addition to improving the practices related to water use, it permits to align and agree on joint participation in relation to its use seeking a common objective: taking care of our water resource.
Water Saving Data:
Three irrigation exhibition modules were offered in 2019 , in industrial tomato, grassland and beans.
We can observe considerable water savings, close to 40% for each crop, bordering 50% in beans, plus a significant yield increase in some crops. The move from traditional to mechanized irrigation systems shows average savings of approximately 3,000 m3/ha in the most relevant crops. There is also an increase in average production reaching approximately 2 ton/ha in crops.
