Juan José Latorre Polytechnic School is located in Mejillones, Antofagasta Region.
Its students study technical courses, in a district where progress goes hand in hand with industrial development. Enel Generación’s Atacama Plant is located some 5 kilometers away.
As part of its strategy to promote the development of a more resilient and inclusive society, Enel Chile is committed to helping improve the country’s educational results.
The company therefore implements initiatives that seek to build learning outcomes in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), in turn motivating young people to join the energy sector.
In this context, thanks to a partnership between the establishment and Enel, 2017 saw the start of the Dual Project, a program for teaching workplace skills and tools to students at polytechnic schools, including the school at Mejillones. This comprises a practical experience for students at the final two grades of high school. Students work alongside teachers who guide them in their everyday activities, learning how their chosen specialty works through on-site methods. The experience includes working alternate weeks alongside specialists from the maintenance division. At the end of their practical program, students must submit a project linked to what they have learned.
