The final game was painful, but once the referee signaled the game was over, the party began: the women’s team from the commune of Independencia had defeated its peers from Inter by 4 goals against 3 in an Italian football field. One hour earlier, the male representatives of the same commune also had won their game against the Europeans, by 3 goals against 1.
Both victories meant the end of a long road, that began in June with the Enel Cup in three regions of Chile –Biobio, Maule and Metropolitan- and culminated with the “Copa de la Integración” in the Giacinto Fachetti Sports Center of Milan.
“Having started by losing one minute into the game made us lose our motivation, but we struggled as the warriors we are, in order to turn the game around and to clasp victory and the Cup, which is what we came here seeking in Italy”, stated eloquently the young captain of Independencia, María Salinas.
From Independencia to Milan
Recently, on September 22nd, both teams from the commune of Independencia were crowned champions of the 2018 Enel Cup. A little more than a month later, on Friday, October 26th, they landed on European soil, not only to play against Inter, but to live through an unforgettable experience as well.
The 18 boys and girls, aged between 9 and 14 years old, were able to tour Milan, know the channels of the historic city of Venice and see the city derby between Inter and A.C. Milan in the Guiseppe Meazza stadium. All this took place accompanied by a legend for both Chileans as for the Inter fanatics: Ivan Zamorano.
