- Enel Distribución launched a new edition of its socio-environmental project in collaboration with Juntas de Vecinos and Chileweather.
- Using vermicomposters, we can avoid emitting over 200 kg of CO₂e annually, which is equivalent to planting about 13 trees.
The "More Energy for Climate Action” project has completed its fourth edition in the municipality of Renca. In the community of Huerto Los Girasoles, residents teamed up with representatives from Enel Distribución and meteorologist Gianfranco Marcone to harvest humus made from organic waste collected from local neighbors.
The initiative, conducted in collaboration with Chileweather, involved thirteen social organizations from eleven communities within the company's concession area. Throughout the year, participants attended talks on climate change and workshops on the proper use of the compost bins provided, reinforcing their commitment to climate action.
Camila De la Quintana, head of Sustainability and Circular Economy at Enel Distribución, commented on the collaboration with Huerto Los Girasoles: "This community is a remarkable example of urban regeneration and collaborative efforts. Their work has led them to be selected for the challenge of revaluing approximately 180 kilograms of organic matter."
The project's objective is to contribute directly to increasing the percentage of organic waste valorization, a key step in mitigating climate change from a community perspective. To this end, disused materials from Enel's operations were used to build vermicomposters, giving them a new life and promoting a circular economy.
"We participated in Enel's workshops, and I believe it has been a valuable experience. When I arrived at the garden and opened it, I found five recycling bags filled with organic material. Five people took the time to collect this material at home and bring it here. That is what community looks like," said Ana María Venegas, president of the organization Huerto Los Girasoles de Renca.
The positive impact of this activity is demonstrated through local climate action. By utilizing vermicomposting, we will prevent the emission of over 200 kg of CO₂e annually, which is equivalent to planting approximately 13 trees. Moreover, the community will receive 36 kilograms of natural fertilizer for their garden, providing a valuable resource to enhance their crops.
"We can see that this community is highly motivated. This activity will be extremely beneficial for them, as humus is the perfect nourishment for these trees. We have successfully transitioned from discussions to tangible actions," stated Gianfranco Marcone, a meteorologist and expert on the climate crisis.
Huerto Los Girasoles is a model of urban regeneration and community collaboration. It features a wide variety of plants, fruits, medicinal species, and self-managed green spaces. Through this project, Enel Distribución promotes local cooperation and the effective use of resources, actively helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.
